Self-Publishing

I've been a professional illustrator for over 40 years and for the last 14 years I've been specialising in children's books.

Over the years I have learned a lot and been asked many questions. I originally wanted my website to let my illustration do the talking but I realised there are many independent authors out there with burning questions and some times words are better.

Straight answers to the questions independent children's-book authors ask

Publishing a children's book yourself can be exciting, but there are a lot of things to work out along the way.

How many illustrations do you need? How much should an illustrator cost? Who owns the artwork? What size should the book be? What does bleed mean? Should your illustrator design the cover? And what actually happens between finishing your manuscript and holding the finished book in your hands?

I've been illustrating and designing for children's publishing for many years, and I've worked across children's books, animation, games, comics and editorial. So I've put together this collection of straightforward answers to some of the questions I'm most often asked by independent authors. No jargon. No sales pitch. Just what I've learned from actually making the books.

If you have a question that I haven't yet answered, get in touch.

This is a style I developed working in the animation and game industry used to iterate character designs. I use this when the project needs a touch of the 3 dimensional. Many a rolling hill in the background.

This is the style that I have been developing and improving since I was 16 years old. I’m working in a maximum of two planes wherever possible. Things in the background are only added when essential to the story. They are often drawn on the same horizon line as the main focal character and adjusted in size to create depth. This is how comics were done originally and is my favourite way to work.
